A social media ban for under-16s passed by the Australian Senate and will soon be a world-first law. Xoliswa Mahlangu Head of Digital Learning and technology at Sifiso EdTech spoke to Thabiso Tema on the POWER Breakfast show about the law and how it will be monitored and controlled.

Australia’s decision to restrict social media access for children under the age of 16 has sparked a global conversation about online safety, screen time and the wellbeing of young people. The law places responsibility on the platforms themselves to verify age and prevent underage users from creating accounts, rather than penalising children or parents.

For parents and educators, the debate is a reminder of how important it is to guide children towards healthy, purposeful use of technology. At Sifiso EdTech, we believe the answer is not simply to keep young people away from screens, but to help them become confident, responsible digital citizens who understand both the opportunities and the risks of the online world. Teaching coding, robotics and digital literacy gives learners the skills to use technology as creators rather than passive consumers, building a generation that is empowered, informed and safe online.
